It’s dedicated to the founder of the Café Nicola della Maddalena  who is linked to the Levantine origins of this "sooty drink," that the legendary waiters of Caffe Greco served to  "Romulus and Remus when they were satiated with milk of the she-wolf. " When Napoleon’s Continental System ,starting in 1806 , blocked British colonial goods including coffee, other  Roman restaurateurs tried to maintain a constant price of coffee by mixing the precious dust with flour, chickpeas, soybeans, or chestnuts Caffe Greco never stopped serving pure coffee. The price doubled, and the cups shrank, but the unmistakable aroma of real coffee continued to attract  our customers.
